Day Trips from Bari: Alberobello & Ostuni

Day Trips from Bari: Alberobello & Ostuni
Why Bari Is the Right Base for This
Bari sits almost exactly between the three towns most visitors want to see in a single day: Alberobello, Ostuni and Polignano a Mare. None of them is more than an hour away by car.
That makes Bari a better base than any single town in the Valle d'Itria if your trip is short. You sleep in one place and still cover trulli, whitewashed hill towns and cliffside beaches in a single day.
It's an ambitious day, though. Each town rewards slowing down, and trying to rush all three can leave you with a lot of photos and not much memory. Below is a realistic way to do it, plus a faster guided alternative.
Alberobello: Trulli in the Morning
Go early. Alberobello's old town is small, and by mid-morning in summer its narrow streets fill with day-trip buses.
The trulli themselves are the reason to come: cone-roofed stone houses, some over a century old, built without mortar so they could be dismantled to dodge property taxes. We cover the full history in our guide to the Trulli of Alberobello.
Two hours is enough to walk the Rione Monti district, the densest cluster of trulli, and still have time for a coffee before moving on.
Ostuni: Puglia's White City at Midday
Ostuni earns its nickname honestly. The old town spills down a hill in tiers of whitewashed houses, visible from the highway long before you arrive.
Midday is actually the right time to be here, even in summer — the white walls reflect enough light that the narrow alleys stay cooler than you'd expect. Get lost in the old town on purpose; that's most of the point.
Stop for lunch here. Ostuni has more good restaurants per square meter than either of the other two stops, and a sit-down meal breaks up the driving.
Polignano a Mare: Cliffs and Caves to Close the Day
Save Polignano for last. Its cliffs and sea caves look best in the late-afternoon light, and it's the stop most worth lingering at until sunset.
Walk the old town first, then head down to Lama Monachile, the cove beneath the main bridge. If you have time for one more thing, a short boat tour shows you the caves you can't reach on foot — we cover the options in our Polignano boat tour guide.
Dinner here is a good way to end the day, with the drive back to Bari under an hour.
Self-Drive or Guided Tour: Two Ways to Do It
A rental car gives you the most control. You can rebalance the day on the fly, spend an extra hour in Ostuni and less in Alberobello, and stop wherever looks good along the way.
A guided day tour is the easier option if you'd rather not navigate small-town parking and one-way streets. It also takes the planning off your hands entirely.
One note on logistics: most single-tour itineraries from Bari combine Polignano, Ostuni and Locorotondo rather than Alberobello specifically, since Locorotondo sits closer along the same route. If Alberobello is your priority, pair a guided Polignano–Ostuni tour with a separate Alberobello tour, or self-drive the full loop.

A Realistic Day-Trip Schedule
8:30am — Leave Bari, arrive Alberobello by 9:30am, ahead of the tour buses.

2:30pm — Drive to Polignano a Mare, roughly 45 minutes.
3:15pm–7:00pm — Old town, Lama Monachile, optional boat tour, dinner.
8:00pm — Back in Bari within the hour.
Practical Tips Before You Go
Parking is tightest in Alberobello and Ostuni during peak summer mornings and weekends. Arriving before 9:30am solves most of it.
Wear shoes you don't mind walking in on uneven stone — all three old towns are best explored on foot, and none of them are flat.
If you're self-driving, download offline maps before you leave Bari. Signal drops in a few stretches of the Valle d'Itria countryside.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you really do Alberobello, Ostuni and Polignano in one day?
Yes, if you keep each stop to two to three hours and start early. It's a full day, not a relaxed one.
Is it better to rent a car or book a tour?
A car gives you more flexibility on timing; a tour is easier if you'd rather not drive or park in small Italian towns.
Which town should I skip if I'm short on time?
Ostuni is the easiest to shorten — an hour in the old town still gives you the core experience, more than Alberobello or Polignano can be cut down to.
